Spitfire propeller ballpoint pen
Quality handmade wooden ballpoint twist pen handmade with Weybridge plywood removed from a second world war Spitfire propeller blade. The pen has brushed Pewter coloured fittings. The blade was produced around 1942.
The legendary Spitfire is thought by many as the most iconic of all fighter aircraft ever built.
Spitfire propellers went through many changes and were made from several different materials. These included three different types of wood.
Hydulignum - high strength compressed birch wood laminate.
Jablo - another form of compressed birch wood laminate.
Weybridge - laminated spruce and fir.
The propeller used to make these pens was constructed from the Weybridge spruce/fir wood. The blade had a steel covered leading edge. For protection, the wooden blades oftenhad a plastic like covering of Rotoloid, Rayoid or Schwarz.
A receipt for the propeller issued by theR J Mitchell Memorial Museum Ltd /Southampton Hall of Aviation in 1992 shows the blades to be from a Spitfire and produced circa 1942.
This is a beautiful handmade quality pen, the comfortable shape in the hand is complemented by the wonderful natural feel and warmth of the wood with a traditional wax finish. The pen makes use of standard Parker® type refills. It will be shipped in black card presentation box as shown. Each pen will vary slightly as no two pieces of wood are quite the same.
All pens are handmade by me beginning with rough cut woods for the body. The body of the pen is turned on a lathe to the final shape as seen on each pen. The body is then sanded, sealed, waxed and polished to its final finish. Assembly is completed by using pre-made high quality pen components for long lasting performance.
